The Wellness Bridge Initiative (WBI), a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving healthcare access and promoting preventive health services in Ghana, has commissioned a Health Kiosk in Adidome, Central Tongu District.
The facility, part of a community-based preventive health project, will provide free blood pressure and blood sugar testing to help reduce stroke, diabetes, and heart disease through early detection and referrals. Trained attendants will check vital health indicators and refer at-risk individuals to health facilities.
The pilot site was launched in Adidome due to its strategic location, with plans to extend the project to five other subdistricts in Central Tongu before scaling it up nationwide.
Togbe Kwasinyi Kakaklolo Agyeman V, Dufia of Adidome and WBI Founder, stressed the need for urgent action against rising hypertension and diabetes cases. Citing a March 2023 WHO report, he noted that 46% of adults with hypertension are unaware of their condition, less than 42% receive treatment, and only about 21% have it under control.
Data from the Central Tongu District Health Directorate shows hypertension cases more than doubled from 1,121 in 2022 to 2,484 in 2024. “This is why we initiated the Health Kiosk Project—so our people can check their blood sugar and blood pressure for free, and be linked to early care,” he said.
WBI also plans to promote nutritional literacy, establish fitness clubs, and intensify community health education. Togbe Agyeman appealed for support from donor agencies, corporate bodies, and philanthropists to sustain the initiative.
Dr Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, Volta Regional Representative of the National Development Planning Commission and Chairman of the event, hailed the project as a major step in expanding access to health services, urging residents to use the facility and the District Assembly to ensure its sustainability.
Central Tongu District Health Director, Mr Baba Awuni, called the kiosk a “game changer” for monitoring key health indicators, facilitating chronic disease follow-up, and serving as a referral point. District Chief Executive Mr Dodzi Addison Mornyuie pledged to mobilise resources for its upkeep.
