Patients suffering from chronic and non-communicable diseases, including cancer, hypertension and diabetes, can now apply for financial support under MahamaCares, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, after the government confirmed that the programme is now fully operational.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh announced this on Monday, December 1, 2025, during the Government Accountability Series in Accra.
He said the Fund has started disbursing money to patients.
“MahamaCares is no longer a promise. It is happening. The secretariat is fully operational, and disbursements have already begun,” he said.
Mr Akandoh said applications submitted by specialist doctors will receive a response within 14 days.
“Once a specialist doctor applies on behalf of a patient, the secretariat will respond within 14 days,” he said.
He added that the arrangement is meant to reduce delays in accessing treatment for chronic and long-term illnesses. He disclosed that the Fund has been allocated about GH?2.3 billion.
MahamaCares was launched in April 2025, followed by parliamentary approval of its governing law in July 2025.
The Fund is expected to support conditions that are not fully covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme.
“We have established the board and secretariat, and they are now fully functional. This is the base that helps applications to be processed quickly and for money to reach patients,” the Minister said.
