Minister for Energy and Green Transition John Abdulai Jinapor has assured electricity consumers that all faulty meters identified through ongoing investigations will be replaced.
In addition, customers found to have overpaid due to metre anomalies will be duly compensated.
The assurance follows a directive by the Ministry to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to probe growing complaints over the rapid depletion of prepaid electricity credits.
The power distributor has been given a seven-day deadline to submit a comprehensive report to guide further regulatory and administrative action.
Jinapor gave the assurance on the sidelines of the commissioning of MBH Power Ghana’s newly constructed Energy Meters Manufacturing Unit in Tema.
“Once we conduct the investigation, assuming some meters are faulty, we have to replace them immediately because you must put in the right meter. And if it turns out that people have overpaid, we have to find a way of compensating them.”
“But like I said, it is just too early. Let us conduct the investigation. Fortunately, we have a very good working relationship with the PURC. So the PURC, the Energy Commission, the Ministry, and all the agencies under me are working together to make sure that we get to the bottom of this matter and resolve it in a fair and impartial manner.”
