The ECOWAS Commission has announced with profound sorrow the passing of its former President, James Victor Gbeho.

The veteran Ghanaian diplomat and statesman died at the age of 91 at a hospital on Saturday, June 13, 2026. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

In a statement issued from its headquarters in Abuja on Sunday, June 14, the ECOWAS Commission described Ambassador Gbeho as an accomplished diplomat, respected regional leader, and dedicated advocate for peace and integration across West Africa.

Ambassador Gbeho served as President of the ECOWAS Commission from February 18, 2010, to March 1, 2012. According to the Commission, he assumed office during a critical period of institutional consolidation following the 2007 reforms that transformed ECOWAS from an Executive Secretariat into a Commission.

The regional body credited his leadership with strengthening ECOWAS institutions, advancing regional integration, and enhancing the organisation’s reputation as one of Africa’s most successful regional blocs.

Before leading the Commission, Ambassador Gbeho played a key role in regional peace efforts. In September 1995, he was appointed ECOWAS Special Representative for Liberia, where he contributed significantly to initiatives aimed at restoring peace, stability, and constitutional order during one of the country’s most turbulent periods.

Throughout a distinguished diplomatic career, Ambassador Gbeho held several high-profile national and international positions. He served as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1997 to 2001, Ghana’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and the United Nations Special Representative for Somalia. He also represented the Anlo Constituency in Parliament.

“Throughout his career, Ambassador Gbeho demonstrated an unwavering commitment to diplomacy, peacebuilding, regional cooperation and public service. His contributions to Ghana, West Africa and the international community will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude,” the ECOWAS statement said.

The Commission extended its condolences to the family of the late diplomat, to John Dramani Mahama, the Government and people of Ghana, as well as members of the diplomatic community across West Africa and all those who worked with him over the course of his career.

The statement concluded with a tribute to the late statesman, saying: “May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
