Residents and businesses in parts of the Greater Accra and Eastern regions are to experience a three-day disruption in water supply from today, as Ghana Water Limited (GWL) undertakes major maintenance works on the Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines.

The exercise, scheduled to end on Saturday, August 8, is expected to affect thousands of consumers who rely on the Kpong Water Supply System.

This follows a planned shutdown of the Kpong Water Treatment Plant to enable engineers to replace deteriorated sections of the pipelines.

GWL explained that the maintenance forms part of a broader effort to improve infrastructure and ensure a more reliable, efficient and sustainable water supply.

The company said routine engineering inspections had revealed over 300 metres of weakened sections along the 21-inch and 42-inch transmission pipelines between Kpong and Tema, which require urgent replacement to prevent major failures and reduce water losses.

To carry out the works, five sections of the pipelines will be isolated, resulting in interruptions and low water pressure across all communities served by the Kpong system during the period.

Areas expected to be affected include Gbetsele, Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone, Dawhenya, Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua and Teshie. All communities within the Tema Metropolis will also be impacted, alongside Kpong, Akuse, Somanya, Atimpoku and nearby towns.

GWL assured the public that its engineers and technical teams would work around the clock to complete the repairs on schedule and restore normal supply as quickly as possible.

The company expressed regret over the inconvenience and urged households, institutions and businesses in the affected areas to store enough water ahead of the shutdown and to use available supplies sparingly.

It also advised hospitals, health facilities and other essential service providers to activate contingency measures to maintain critical operations.

GWL indicated that water tankers would be deployed, where possible, to supply selected essential institutions during the maintenance period.

The company stressed that the intervention was necessary to protect one of the country’s most important water transmission systems, noting that the replacement works would help reduce pipeline bursts, minimise emergency shutdowns, improve operational efficiency and strengthen long-term water supply to Tema and surrounding communities along the eastern corridor.

GWL reaffirmed its commitment to delivering safe, reliable and sustainable potable water and appealed to customers for patience and cooperation.

It added that regular updates on the progress of the works would be shared through its official communication channels, and the public would be informed promptly once normal water supply is fully restored.
