The Nyinahin magistrate's court, has fined a couple; Osei Kofi, 52 and Abena Pokuaa, 38, both farmers from Sreso-Timpon near Nyinahin in the Ashanti Region an amount of GH¢400, for stealing seven bunches of plantain valued at GH¢28 belonging to Mr Kwabena Antwi, also a farmer.
They pleaded not guilty to the charge and would serve six months imprisonment each, if they failed to pay the fine.
In addition, the court ordered each of them to pay GH¢100 as compensation to the complainant.
Giving the facts of the case, Police Chief Inspector Francis Kudjo Kpoafah told the court presided over by Mr. Augustine Essah that, the convicts have a farm at Sreso-Timpon near Nyinahin in the Atwima Mponua District, which is close to that of the complainant.
He said on June 30, last year, at about 09:00 Hours, Mr Antwi went to his farm and detected the missing bunches, and upon his own investigations, he identified two of them among 26 other bunches by the roadside belonging to other people, which had been stolen by the couple ready to be sent home.
The Prosecutor said the complainant then informed the Unit Committee Members of the area, who ordered that the plantains be sent to the chief's palace.
Chief Inspector Kpoafah said, the couple together with the complainant and the Committee Members went to the police station and after investigations, the couple were charged and arraigned.
