Unite For Sight, a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), based in the United States of America (UST), in collaboration with Charity Eye Clinic, in Kumasi has organized a free eye screening exercise for residents of Asante Akim South at Juaso.
The three-day exercise saw hundreds of people from the district converging at the Juaso District Hospital, including the aged, adult and children all for treatment.
The exercise included eye examination, provision of drugs, spectacles as well as sight restoring surgeries, when necessary.
The surgery would, however, be conducted at the Charity Eye Clinic in Kumasi on June 24, with the NGO providing for the transportation and accommodation of the beneficiaries.
A seven-member team of volunteers, who were overwhelmed by the massive turn-out, had to work extra hours to ensure most people were screened.
Dr Robert Dolo, leader of the team told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), that the exercise was an outreach programme to provide eye care services to people in the rural areas.
He said the move to assist such people was necessitated by their inability to access eye care at various health facilities due to financial constraints.
He noted that the exercise would be extended to the Asante Akim North Municipality and urged the public to take advantage of it to improve upon their sight.
Dr Dolo lauded the authorities of the hospital and the District Assembly for their role in the organization of the exercise.
Mr Abdul Karim Boakye-Yiadom, District Chief Executive (DCE), who presented assorted drinks and mineral water to the team, commended them for their volunteerism.
He urged them to make the exercise an annual affair to help provide eye care services for the people, most of whom could not afford hospital bills.
