The National Insurance Commission (NIC) on Wednesday, organized a forum in Koforidua, to sensitize commercial drivers, car owners and the general public on the different types of insurance policies that exist and the need to ensure that all vehicles are insured.
Mrs Emma Ocran, Legal Director, NIC, urged Insurance Companies to conduct their business fairly to ensure that clients get their claims on time whenever the need arises.
She advised Insurance companies to guard against using their clients premium to purchase expensive vehicles for their own use, adding that, the NIC would not hesitate to sanction those who frustrate their clients in the collection of claims.
Mrs Ocran said the NIC was ensuring that any Insurance company, which wants to operate in the country, had adequate resources and the necessary equipment, before being given license to commence business.
She stressed the importance of insurance and encouraged all to take insurance cover especially transport owners.
Mr Oliver Bio, Legal Officer, NIC, said an Insurance company should be able to pay claims to a client within 90 days, especially when the documents, including police and medical report were in order.
He advised people who may face difficulties in the collection of claims to report at the complaints settlement bureau of the NIC, adding that, the department had so far successfully settled about 3,000 complaints.
Mr Bio urged people who purchase vehicles from other sources to ensure that they change its ownership immediately, to enable them to make claims in case of an accident.
He urged transport owners to ensure that their drivers have valid driver's license.
Mr Samuel Kwame Sasu, officer in charge State Insurance Company (SIC) Life Policy, educated the public on the various kinds of insurance policies, including the Family Security Plan, which he said was beneficial.
Mr Eric Brako, Deputy Eastern Regional Branch Manager, SIC, advised the drivers not to overload their vehicles to enable them to make claims in case of an accident.
