Women from both Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities gathered in central Nicosia on Sunday, calling for a speedy solution of the Cyprus problem and the reunification of their island country.
Greek Cypriot leader and President Demetris Christofias launched in September with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat substantive talks aimed at reunifying the island which remains divided since 1974.
But the negotiations are moving at a slow pace as the two sides differ on how to create a federal structure which will be viable and mutually acceptable.
The women from various organizations and trade unions expressed their full support for the negotiating process in a joint declaration.
"The women's organizations believe that the substantive talks between President Christofias and Talat can, with good will and determination, lead to a bizonal, bicommunal federation, based on political equality as it is defined in UN Security Council decisions," read the declaration.
They also want to make their efforts as mothers and sisters for reconciliation and rapprochement of the two communities.
Under the slogan "Now is the time for solution, reunification and peace", they expressed their desire to build a happier future for future generations which will allow them to live in peace, far from prejudice and with respect for diversity.
