The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPTRU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has called on the State Protocol to involve it in planning for the state visit of the United States President Barack Obama to ensure orderliness on the roads.
"It is important to involve all stakeholders in planning for the visit so as to know their respective roles, rather than doing it alone and later issue instructions for us to follow".
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra on Thursday, Mr Alando A. Sidik, General Secretary of the union said; "Being drivers does not mean we have nothing to offer. We are in the job of transportation and we have the moral obligation to ensure orderliness and courtesy on the road".
Mr Sidik said if the State Protocol ignored the union, its members would run their normal business adding, "but I think there should be co-operation at all times''.
He appealed to the government to support the union in establishing training centres to train drivers as was done for officials in the civil and public offices.
He said that would go a long way to reduce accidents on the roads and improve the performances of drivers.
Mr Sidik appealed to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to ensure the roadworthiness of vehicles before issuing licences to the drivers.
He also appealed to the municipal and district assembles to check the activities of hawkers on the roads to ensure sanity.
