Government has constituted Child Panels at the Metropolitan, Municipal and District assemblies (MMDAs) to strengthen the Children's Act.
Mr. Alexis Adugdaa Ayamdor, Bongo District Chairman of the Social Services Sub-Committee of Child Panel, told the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga, that the implementation of the concept followed a directive from the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs.
Mr. Ayamdor who is also the Assemblyman for Zorku Kanga explained that the panels would ensure that the rights of children are not trampled.
He expressed disappointment about some law enforcement agencies, which fails to arrest and prosecute perpetrators of child abuse in order to serve as deterrent to others.
Mr. Ayamdor said people who engaged in child trafficking or exploit child labour should face the full rigours of the law.
He noted that the Children's Act protects minors from engaging in any work that constitute a threat to their health, education or development.
Mr. Ayamdor said children should not be subjected to torture, cruel, inhuman treatment or punishment.
He said forceful marriage of children was some of the challenges facing the panel in the district since it led to the withdrawal of the victims from school.
Some parents prefer sending their male children to school at the neglect of their female offspring.
Mr. Ayamdor said his outfit would intensify public education at the district to discourage outmoded customs that inhibited child rights.
