A 22 year-old mechanic who was found in possession of a quantity of cannabis sativa when he visited his friends at the Nima Police Station was on Monday sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment in hard labour by a Circuit Court in Accra.
Abubakari Osman, aka Abu Terror, pleaded not guilty but the court, presided over by Mr Mahamadu Iddrisu found him guilty of possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority.
The case presented by Assistant State Attorney Mr John Tulasi Ofori was that on October 20, 2008, two police officers were on duty at the Nima Police Station Charge office when the convict arrived at 1900 hours ostensibly to deliver food to his fiends who were in custody.
Mr Ofori said the policemen ordered him to bring out all the items on him.
The prosecution said Osman resisted initially but due to pressure mounted on him he obliged and among the items on him were two wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa, two packets of London King Size cigarette and a lighter.
During interrogation, he admitted ownership of the cannabis saying it was for his personal use.
