The Amansie West Youth Association has called on President John Evans Atta Mills to review the Anwiankwanta-Abore-Adumasa road contract which was awarded to Messrs A Kannin Construction Limited on the eve of former President Kufuor's departure from office.
"This contract we are told did not go through the normal tender procedure for competitive bidding", the youth alleged in a petition sent to President Mills at the Castle, Osu.
According to the petition signed by Mr William Bediako Asante, President of the Association and made available to the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi, the Company had failed to perform satisfactorily when a similar contract was awarded to it in the district previously.
It also indicated that the road project would not benefit majority of people in the district since only seven towns would benefit from the 75-kilometre road contract.
The petition said the youth was calling for the review of the project and the re-channelling of that money for the construction of the Mim-Keniago highway which would help open up over 80 communities in the northern sector of the district.
It added that the Mim-Keniago road which passes through Agroyesum where the only hospital in the district is located and Manso-Adubia where there is a secondary school and health centre is very deplorable, and that there was the urgent need to rehabilitate it to ease the drudgery of the people commuting in the district.
In a related development, the chief of Keniago traditional area, Nana Yamoah Bediako III, has also petitioned the President to review the road contract for the benefit of the majority of people in the district.
In a petition to President Mills, Nana Bediako expressed worry that the current road contract if allowed to continue would be unfair and deny majority of the people easy access to basic facilities in the district.
He said the chiefs and people in the area were in support of the youth's demand for justice and fairness and to ensure that the Mim-junction-Keniago road was constructed to open up the area for all.
