Trade Minister, Hannah Tetteh on Wednesday inaugurated a nine-member governing representatives of the Free Zones Board and charged them, to attract more companies into the enclave.
The Ghana Free Zones Scheme is an integrated Programme to promote processing and manufacturing of goods through the establishment of Export Processing Zones.
It also encourages the development of commercial and service activities at the seaports and airports.
The aim of the scheme is to make Ghana accessible to potential investors by offering generous incentives to those who have the opportunity to use the free zones as focal points to produce goods and services for foreign markets.
Since its establishment in 1995 the board has attracted 205 companies.
Ms Tetteh said the number of companies attracted in the 15- year history of the board should not be viewed as an excellent track record.
"There is the need to do more to enhance the attractiveness of the enclave as the main destination in the sub-region," she said.
She urged the Board to take advantage of the oil discovery in the Western Region to develop multi-purpose industrial parks to make Takoradi, the regional capital, a business port city.
Ms Tetteh called on members to be proactive and attend board meetings to provide direction to staff on the implementation of key decisions.
The Minister is the chairperson of the board.
