The Forestry Service Department, in the Upper East Region has nursed and distributed 61,000 tree seedlings to interested groups and organisations for planting.
The seedlings, which include teak, kapok, moringa, and mahogany, were nursed to facilitate efforts of the region to protect the environment.
Mr. Domi Sarichy, Assistant Regional Manager of the Department made this known to the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday in Bolgatanga.
He said Green Ghana, a non-governmental organisation, which seeks to improve the environment, sponsored the production of the seedlings.
Mr. Sarichy said there was the need for Ghana to plant trees because the vegetation cover kept the soil together and prevented erosion.
He explained that minimizing soil erosion would maintain nutrients for good cropping.
Mr. Sarichy said his outfit had undertaken a number of projects including the Government Plantation Development Project.
He expressed concern about illegal hunting and burning of the bush by some residents of the region.
