Representatives from 12 South American countries on Monday began discussions on migration policies in the region at the 9th South American Conference on Migrations started here on Monday.
The two-day meeting is aimed at unifying migration criteria and moving ahead to harmonize the regional migratory policy, said Ecuadorian Migration Minister Lorena Escudero, who hosted the meeting.
The meeting also aimed "to consolidate the possibilities of freedom of transit in the region, a common vision of the migratory policies and to have a shared vision at international discussions," Escudero added.
Escudero also said there are possibilities to move ahead with the South American human development plan for migrations.
Also the representatives will discuss the restrictive measures in the European Union and United States, main destinations of South American migrants.
The last conference on migrations in the region was held in 2008 in Uruguay.
