The Central Regional office of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) says it is enforcing the use of the new warning triangles with reflective lights to help curb road accidents in the region.
As a result, it has made it compulsory that all vehicle owners who go to register their new vehicles must buy it, while those renewing their road worthiness certificates must also buy it to support road safety measures.
Mr. Thomas Nintori, Regional Licensing Officer, who stated this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Cape Coast on Friday, said it was imperative for all drivers to purchase and use the new warning triangles.
He explained that the new triangles which were also heavier, were more effective in alerting motorists to the presence of broken down vehicles, unlike the old ones which were non-reflective and light and easily fell down
"at the slightest breeze."
Touching on the revenue accruing from the registration of vehicles in the Region, he disclosed that between 2007 to date, the authority realized a total of GH¢98,865.00 from the registration of 4,097 vehicles.
Giving a breakdown, Mr Nintori said in 2007, an amount of GH¢30,525 was realized when 1,270 vehicles were registered, GH¢36,945 in 2008 from 1,558 vehicles and from January this year to date, GH¢31,395 from 1,269 vehicles.
He said within the same period, a total of 5,930 of the new drivers' licenses had been issued, with 1,493 in 2007, 2,387 in 2008 and 2,053 this year.
On the use of fake number plates, he said his outfit had so far not encountered that problem.
