The Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) said Tuesday member countries have agreed to bring in a rapid intervention force to combat foreign aggression.
Abdul Rahman Al-Attiya said at a press conference after the 30th GCC leaders' summit
that the joint force would be functional to address emergency situation and support stability in the world's largest oil exporting region.
But he did not disclose details on the initiated force. That step was considered as a response to the infiltration into Saudi Arabia by Yemeni Shiite rebels this year.
The GCC groups Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The six together pocket 45 percent of the world's proven oil reserves and have accelerated
the pace to build up their military in recent years.
The region also home to several U.S. military bases including the Fifth Fleet in the island
nation of Bahrain and a logistic hub in Kuwait.
