A Spanish soldier was killed Friday in a bomb blast in north-western Afghanistan, the government said.
Sergeant David Fernandez Urena, 35, was defusing a bomb which had been located on a road near Qala-i-Naw, when it or another bomb exploded.
Spain has about 1,400 troops in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). They are due to withdraw by the end of 2014.
Ninety-nine Spanish soldiers have been killed during the mission. Sixty-two of them died in an air crash in Turkey when returning home in 2003.
