African Assistance Plan (AAP), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in Sunyani, is to construct 60 boreholes in 20 communities in the Brong-Ahafo Region by the end of 2013.
The project, estimated at a cost of GH¢ 110,000.00, is being financed by the NGO through the support of Living Water International, an NGO based in the United States of America.
Madam Rose Meda Donkor, Director of Programmes of AAP, speaking to newsmen in Sunyani on Friday, said the beneficiary communities would have to apply to benefit from the boreholes.
The application "does not mean the communities will contribute financially" but to guarantee that those beneficiaries would ensure proper maintenance culture in the use of the facilities,” she said.
She said in 2012, the NGO rehabilitated 54 boreholes at the cost of GH¢
142,520 which it constructed in more than 30 communities in the Brong-Ahafo and Western Regions some years ago.
Madam Donkor said under its three-year development plan, the NGO intended to construct 110 boreholes in some parts of the two regions.
She explained that aside the water projects, AAP also worked to promote environmental sanitation in the two regions and that it was collaborating with school authorities to establish sanitation clubs where it would construct toilets facilities in the schools.
Madam Donkor said the schools would also be provided with dustbins and other sanitary equipment to promote environmental cleanliness.
