AFTER a grueling political campaign, the nation went to the polls to elect a president and 275 parliamentarians.
And barring any unforeseen circumstances, counting of ballots should by now give us an indication as to the set of people who would govern the country for the next four years.
However, the new government must take charge of a country that is united and at peace with itself.
The challenge is that, unity is not a popular word in the Ghanaian context due to the polarisation between the two major political parties; the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Besides, the campaigns were sometimes ugly, acrimonious and full of insults. Indeed, some describe this year’s campaigns as the most contentious in the history of the Fourth Republic.
It is, for this reason that many people heaved a sigh of relief and prayed for the elections to be over and done with quickly.
As we await the final results, it is important for the nation to get back to work again. The country must unite and for all sides to forget about the insults and the ugly campaign.
Hopefully, by the end of the week, we should have a clear indication as to who we have elected as president and as our parliamentarians.
While many are going to be happy, others without doubt, are going to be disappointed and angry, and no one can prevent anybody from feeling the way they want to feel.
Whatever the case may be, we need to move forward by forgiving one another for the sake of the country.
More importantly, no matter who wins or who loses, now that the elections are over, we should bury our differences and come together for the good of the country.
Definitely, it may take some time for wounds to heal, but all sides must extend a hand of friendship by moving away from the hurt of the elections.
From now up to the next election in 2020, we should show love to one another, bury the hatchet, because we all hurt each other in one way or the other and should not bear grudges.
We have a country to build, generations to nurture and, therefore, cannot remain divided and expect to develop into a prosperous nation.
We invite all the parties to forge together in unity.
Ghana is the winner and may it become greater and stronger.
