The National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Mr Kofi Adams has dragged three persons of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to court for defamation. The three are Nana Obiri Boahen, Deputy General Secretary, Kwame Baffoe alias Abronye DC, Brong Ahafo Youth organiser of the NPP and David Asante, a member of the NPP Communication Team.
Mr Adams is seeking compensatory damages of GH one million cedis each from the defendants for injury of character and integrity as well as aggravated damages for malicious defamation. He is also restraining the defendants from further commenting on the said issues of the defamation.
The NDC organiser is also seeking an order from the court for an unconditional retraction and offers of an unqualified apology for the said defamatory comments in the media. Mr Adams, a former teacher of Adisadel College said he was into large scale farming of cocoa, rice, citrus, and piggery while Baffoe was engaged in in what he described as “vigilante work,” in retrieving vehicles said to belong to the state and purportedly stolen by ex-government officials.
He contended in his statement of Claim that on February I, this year, five vehicles were retrieved from his Golf City Residence without lawful recourse to lawful authority and due process by a group led by Baffoe. Soon after the act, the plaintiff said the defendants made some defamatory statements indicating that Mr Adams stole the said cars and attempted to change the chassis numbers to cover the alleged criminal conduct.
According to Mr Adams, the defendants uttered and repeated their defamatory comments on many radio stations and print media. Boahen and Baffoe, Mr Adams said had continued in their mission to cause damage his reputation after the Police who he alleged wrongfully and unlawfully detained the said cars had conducted investigation at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, Customs and Ghana Revenue Authority and confirmed that the vehicles did not belong to the State.
