The Municipal Chief Executive for Agona West, Mrs Justina Marigold Assan, has indicated that the government, through the municipal assembly, will forge a good partnership with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) towards improving the living conditions of the people in the municipality.
She said the government was overstretched in terms of addressing the needs of the people in the area and that such complementary efforts by NGOs would always be welcomed to reduce pressure on the assembly.
According to her, the necessary conducive environment would be created by the assembly to attract NGOs and other corporate entities into the municipality to enable such bodies to support the assembly in providing basic facilities for the citizenry.
Inauguration
Mrs Assan stated this at the inauguration of two mechanised boreholes constructed by the Viva Support Foundation (VSF), a non-profit making organisation for the people of Agona Nkum and Ahamadonko in the Agona West Municipality.
Both projects, which were constructed at a cost of GH¢35,000, has a 5,000 litre water tank fixed directly on the borehole to pump water for residents, and with the objective of addressing the perennial water problems of residents in both communities.
Water situation
For Agona Nkum, the entire town has not seen water flowing through their taps for the past two years due to the destruction of the main pipe lines to the town by contractors who constructed the main road to the town.
Elders of the community have made many efforts through the municipal assembly to the Ghana Water Company Limited(GWCL) for the broken down pipes to be repaired but all efforts had proven unsuccessful.
On the part of Ahamadonko, all the boreholes constructed for the town broke down due to the intense pressure on the facility.
She welcomed the timely intervention by VSF as it would reduce the pressure on residents of both communities.
She noted that the provision of the water would bring a huge relief to the residents, who hitherto had to struggle in search of water, as well as prevent the spread of water-borne diseases in the communities.
She made a passionate appeal to the chiefs to form a Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) committee that will oversee the operations of the project to ensure its lifespan.
“Proper maintenance of these projects by you would encourage VSF and other organisations to come to our aid” she pointed out to the residents.
