Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta has told the crowds at the Heroes' Day celebrations in central, Nairobi, that his administration is ready to counter any threats to national security as the country prepares for the re-run of presidential elections next Thursday.
The security forces have been bolstered and appropriately deployed to maintain law and order, he said. The law would apply equally and nobody would be spared, he added. The president said he would not allow a repeat of the painful past where lives and property had been lost.
After elections in December 2007, more than 1,500 died in post-poll, in ethnically driven violence. Mr Kenyatta also warned those threatening election officials.
On Wednesday, an electoral commissioner fled the country to the US, saying she had received death threats. Mr Kenyatta's main rival Raila Odinga has withdrawn from the poll, saying it will not be free and fair.
