The La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA) Department of the National Commission fo r Civic Education, in a bid to improve on sanitation and health, have marked this year's Citizenship Week with a cleanup exercise across the Municipality.
The exercise, which was undertaken mainly by pupils from public and private schools within the Municipality, was aimed at inculcating in the public, especially the young ones, good sanitation practices that would empower them to ensure a clean environment and a healthy life.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency during the exercise, Mrs Gloria Amarkie Kudo, the Municipal Director of NCCE in LaDMA, said over the years the Commission had educated the public, especially school children, on their rights and responsibilities to mark the Citizenship Week.
She said the Commission was embarking on the cleanup exercise to create awareness and imbibe in the children good sanitation practices that would enable them to avoid activities that littered the environment.
"The pupils are from 47 Basic and Senior High Schools and are drawn from six circuits within the municipality including Manle Dada Circuit, Addobetor Circuit, Airport-Rangoon Circuit, Emaus Circuit, Adjetey Circuit and Arakan Circuit."
"We are carrying out this exercise with the children to inculcate in them best sanitation practices and also educate them on how they can ensure that they lived in a healthy environment," Mrs Kudo stated.
The event, which was sponsored by the European Union, with support from the LaDMA, saw the pupils clear bushes, desilt drains to allow free flow of water, and sweep unkempt surroundings.
Mrs Kudo called on Ghanaians to take it upon themselves to keep a clean environment by doing away with acts that polluted the environment to ensure that government achieved its goal of a clean city.
"Let's ensure that we segregate our waste and avoid dumping them into gutters and waterways. When we start doing this I believe the children will emulate it and this will enhance the cleanliness of our environment."
The Citizenship Week, also known as Constitutional Day, is marked annually to remind Ghanaians of the referendum that saw the country move from a Military regime to a Constitutional era.
This year's commemoration was marked under the theme: "A Clean Ghana, Our Responsibility".
