Police in the Namibian capital, Windhoek, have fired teargas and rubber bullets at protesters seeking an end to violence against women.

The country has one of the highest levels of reported rapes in the world while more than 200 cases of domestic violence are registered each month in Windhoek.

A wave of demonstrations began on Thursday after a campaign on social media for President Hage Geingob to declare a state of emergency over gender-based violence.

On Saturday, hundreds of young women marched towards one of the main shopping malls in Windhoek, but the demonstration was broken up by police.
Dozens were detained and some protesters said they had been assaulted by officers.

The first lady of Namibia, Monica Kalondo, had earlier offered her support to the movement.

Similar protests have been taking place in other cities.
