Former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a passionate appeal to members of his party to put an immediate stop to internal squabbles and focus their energies on exposing what he described as the “ills” of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Addressing delegates at the NPP’s 2025 National Annual Delegates Conference in Accra today, Dr. Bawumia bemoaned the persistent attacks and divisions that emerge within the party, especially during times of internal contest for leadership positions. He warned that such indiscipline undermines the NPP’s electoral fortunes and strengthens their political opponents.
“An army that wants to win a battle must exercise discipline within its ranks,” Dr. Bawumia stated firmly.
“Too often when we are yet to choose leaders, indiscipline, unacceptable language and unpardonable behavior become the order of the day. In the end when internal competitions are over, the attacks we would have launched on ourselves become the fodder and ammunition with which our opponents will attack us,” he lamented.
He cited the 2024 general elections as a painful example of how internal rifts can damage the party’s electoral prospects. “We experienced it in the 2024 campaign, and we should not let it happen again a second time. That is why I call on all kukrudites to ‘Stop the internal attacks now.’”
Dr. Bawumia also redirected attention to what he called troubling actions by the NDC government. He accused the ruling party of undermining the country’s democratic institutions and rule of law, referencing recent developments involving the judiciary and the Electoral Commission.
“Let us rather focus on the attempt by the NDC to undermine our democracy and rule of law in trying to remove the Chief Justice! Let us focus on their clear intention to go after the Electoral Commissioner subsequently!” he charged.
He further condemned incidents of political violence allegedly carried out by NDC supporters during the Ablekuma West constituency election, saying, “Let us focus on the violence and thuggery their hoodlums carried out in the recent Ablekuma election in the full view of the police and cameras.”
Dr. Bawumia also called for justice and accountability: “I again call on the President to bring the perpetrators to book and to remind them that the elephant never forgets! No matter how long it takes, we will prosecute the perpetrators when we assume office in 2029, Insha Allah.”
Concluding his address, Dr. Bawumia urged the NPP leadership to enforce party discipline as they re-strategise for future elections. “To the leadership of the party, I ask that you be firm and crack the whip so that discipline is maintained within our ranks. It is with discipline, humility, lessons learnt and pursuit of the common good for Ghana that we can become the refreshed party we desire,” he said.
