The Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region is set to improve security and lighting across the municipality with the procurement of over 1,500 streetlights.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ablekuma North, Kalamu Musah Adamu, announced this at a town hall meeting for the Odorkor-Otaten Zonal Council, which includes areas such as Tsuimami, Odorkor, Otaten, Sakaman and Awoshie.
The town hall meeting was held at Sakaman last Tuesday.
It was in line with Section 40 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) that mandates all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to facilitate the effective participation of residents and stakeholders in the governance and development processes of their respective areas.
Mr Adamu further revealed that the assembly has begun engaging with local communities to establish neighbourhood watchdog committees to enhance security in the municipality.
He gave an assurance that the assembly would tackle the developmental challenges faced by residents in the municipality on an electoral area basis.
Top among the concerns raised by various representatives — including unit committee members, GPRTU, traders, women and youth groups — at the meeting were poor roads and drainage system, unemployment and lack of streetlights.
There are 14 electoral areas in the Ablekuma North municipality.
They are Amoanaa, Nyamekye, East Darkuman, West Darkuman, Kwashieman, Awoshie, Been-To, Kwashiebu, Odorkor, Tsuimami, Otaten, Akwiebu, Tweneboah and Sakaman.
