Former Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Obidombie Kwabena Asamoah, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to desist from tribal politics.
Speaking at the KNUST-TESCON dinner night in Kumasi, on Saturday, September 6, Kwabena Asamoah urged the youth to end comments on tribal sentiments, emphasising that it is extremely hurtful and divisive.
“I think we have come to a point in this country where we have got to decide what type of country we are trying to build. And we cannot be a country that is divided along tribal and religious lines,” he stated.
“Whether you are Frafra, Asante, Akyim, Ewe, Nzema, Dagomba, it doesn’t matter; we are all Ghanaians. We all pledge our allegiance to the same flag, and that flag unit all of us, and I believe that is where our focus should be”, he added.
He further emphasised that African countries that are progressing, like Rwanda and Mauritius, have moved past tribal faction.
Commenting on the NPP’s defeat in the Akwatia by-election, Kwabena Asamoah said the defeat is a message Ghanaians continue to send to the NPP.
“I want to thank the people of Akwatia. We had 15,235 who voted for the NPP. We say thank you. For the 18,199 that made a mistake by voting for the NDC, we say thank you to them as well,” he added.
“I wouldn’t say it is a defeat for us, I think that it just shows that the Ghanaian people continue to send the NPP a message, and I believe and have the hope that the leadership of our party is listening and can clearly hear the message the people are trying to send to us”
He further explained that the people had high hopes and expectations. However, he said that these expectations are sometimes difficult to meet, but he believes the party’s leadership is doing its best to resolve them.
Kwabena Asamoah encouraged the youth of the party not to give up ahead of their impending Presidential primaries and the 2028 election, stating that the best is yet to come.
