Former Majority Leader and senior advisor to the Bawumia Campaign, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has affirmed that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia fully meets the constitutional requirements to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, October 6, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu referenced Article 13 Clause 7 of the NPP constitution, which outlines the basic qualifications for any member seeking to lead the party.
“As far as I am concerned, the party’s constitution is clear on who should lead us, and it’s provided for in Article 13 Clause 7 of the party’s constitution — that whoever should lead or aspires to lead the party should have been active in the party for a minimum of five years,” he stated. “Bawumia, in my view, satisfies that condition.”
The former Majority Leader also underscored the importance of character in leadership, stressing that it remains a critical standard for anyone aspiring to the presidency.
“The second thing is that, that person should be of good character, and Bawumia is of impeccable character,” he said. “Why should the party’s constitution say that a person should be of good character? Because, you see, when you get elected as our presidential candidate — and mind you, we are not looking for a mere flagbearer, we are looking for a presidential candidate — that person should be of good character.”
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu further explained that the emphasis on character stems from the responsibility of leadership, noting that the party’s standard-bearer serves as a model for both members and the nation at large.
“Because once elected, you become the role model not only for the party but, if by God’s grace you become the president, you become the role model for the entirety of the country. That is why the character of that person should be beyond question,” he stated.
