The Bryan Acheampong presidential campaign has issued a firm rebuttal after a group of New Patriotic Party (NPP) organisers in the Ashanti Region blamed the Member of Parliament for Abetifi for the party's defeat in the 2024 general election.
The campaign labelled the allegations as "false" and declared it would not engage with what it termed "provocations."
The controversy stems from a statement released on October 28 and signed by 62 constituency and polling station organisers from the opposition party. They pointed directly to Dr. Acheampong's attempted acquisition of majority shares in SSNIT hotels while he was a Minister of State as a primary reason for the electoral loss.
Their statement read, "The attempted acquisition of majority shares in SSNIT hotels by Dr Bryan Acheampong while serving as a Minister of State constituted a serious breach of public trust and a major contributing factor to our defeat." The organisers contended that this act provoked SSNIT contributors to not only vote against the NPP but also to actively campaign for its defeat.
In a press statement released in response, the Communications Directorate for the Bryan Acheampong campaign dismissed the claims. It also highlighted serious irregularities with the accusers' statement, noting it "included the names of some unwilling individuals — and even a deceased person — as signatories," and was "laced with unfortunate insults and baseless accusations."
However, the campaign has chosen a path of restraint. Its statement explained that the decision not to directly counter the allegations was made "out of respect for our shared commitment to a united NPP, the values of Dr. Bryan Acheampong’s campaign and following the meeting with Former President Akufo-Addo, where we affirmed the same." Consequently, the campaign stated it "will not dignify these provocations with a response" and urged its supporters nationwide to follow suit by not engaging, responding, or returning insults.
Reaffirming its focus, the Acheampong campaign said its efforts remain centred on "engaging delegates with respect, advancing ideas that strengthen the NPP, and preparing the party for decisive victory in 2028."
The statement concluded by thanking "Asanteman for their massive support over the last few days and all supporters across the country for their continued confidence and overwhelming support for Dr. Bryan Acheampong."
