The National Chief Imam, Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has called on Ghanaians to reaffirm their commitment to constitutional democracy, national unity and economic prosperity as the country marks its 69th Independence Day.

In a message to commemorate the anniversary, the Islamic leader urged citizens to use the occasion to strengthen interfaith harmony and deepen their dedication to the principles that sustain the nation’s democratic governance.

The statement, issued on his behalf by his Personal Assistant, Dr Mohammed Marzuq Abubakari Azindoo, congratulated the Government and people of Ghana on the milestone observed on March 6, 2026.

Reflecting on global developments, the Chief Imam noted that the world is currently facing various turbulences, including the rise of authoritarian regimes, military conflicts and the spread of violent extremism and genocidal ideologies. He said these worrying trends should inspire Ghanaians to strengthen their nation-building efforts through unity in diversity.

He also reflected on Ghana’s historical journey, acknowledging colonialism as an indelible mark of agony while stressing that Ghanaians should draw comfort from their collective victory for liberty and independence.

The National Chief Imam concluded his message with prayers for divine guidance and blessings for John Dramani Mahama, the government and the entire nation.
