Portuguese police detained two suspected members of the Basque separatist group ETA early Sunday morning in northeast Portugal bordering Spain, local police said.
The two, a man and a woman, were detained in the province of Braganza by the Portuguese National Guard after the Spanish police warned of an ETA
member running into Portugal.
The man, who was crossing the border into Portugal from Spain, was detained at a check point with explosives found in his car. Police had
followed and captured him in Torre de Moncorvo, 40 km away from the border.
Portuguese Police also detained a woman who had helped the man to run from Spain.
The detainees are expected to be extradited to Spain, Braganza authorities said.
Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates said on Sunday that he was satisfied with the police cooperation between Portugal and Spain.
"I am very satisfied with the police cooperation between the two countries in combating terrorism," he said. "It had good results."
Socrates did not give more details on the joint operation.
"We have to wait for more reliable and detailed information from the Internal Administration Ministry," he added.
