The Foundation for Sustainable Development in Africa, Ghana(FSDA-Ghana), would host a sub-regional durbar between four border communities of two member-states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at Aflao.
The durbar scheduled for Saturday May 28, would involve the chiefs and people of Ketu South and Ketu North in the Volta Region on the Ghana side of the border and Kodzoviakope and Nyekornakpoe, Lome, on the Togo side.
The durbar would also be attended by all identified social, business, women, youth groups, as well border agencies who were involved in the implementation process.
Mr Frederick Y. Alipui, Executive Director FSDA-Ghana announced this at a four-day capacity building workshop for the border agencies stationed at the Ghana-Togo border, opinion leaders and economic operators crossing the border daily, at Aflao.
He said the main aim of the durbar was to promote non-state actors participation in the ECOWAS regional integration process in order to achieve the Borderless West Africa as enunciated in the ECOWAS Vision 2020.
The durbar which would be hosted by Torgbui Amenya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of Aflao, is expected to attract dignitaries from Ghana and Togo as well as ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
At the durbar, the outcome of the workshops organised within the project implementation framework would be presented to the Ghanaian and Togolese officials, highlighting the main concerns and challenges to the free movement of people and goods.
The Grand Durbar is the climax of series of activities being implemented by FSDA-Ghana, under its project of ” Empowering Women, Youth and economic operators in the ECOWAS Regional Integration Process”.
The project was under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, ECOWAS and with funding from the European Union.
Float vehicles transporting brass band and/or individual drummers/dancers would precede the durbar to draw attention of the targeted population to the role of ECOWAS.
The day marks the 36th anniversary of the founding of ECOWAS.
