Matthew Rusike scored a debut goal with his first touch as Cape Town City claimed a 1-0 away success at Bidvest Wits to advance to the second round of South Africa's Nedbank Cup on Wednesday.
The striker netted with an excellent header inside 90 seconds as he superbly met Teko Modise's deep cross, helping his side claim a fourth straight victory over Wits this season.
Wits had the upper hand after that in difficult, wet conditions, but could not beat City goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters, who was restored between the sticks for the cup encounter.
Sifiso Myeni shot over the bar when he should have scored, while James Keene had chances and right at the death Bongani Khumalo could not find the back of the net from close range. ?
National First Division basement side Ubuntu Cape Town secured the first shock of the tournament this year when they defeated top-flight Polokwane City 3-2 after extra-time at Athlone Stadium.
Zambian Salulani Phiri had the visitors in front early on, but two goals from forward Ranga Chivaviro swung the tie in Ubuntu's favour. He took his tally to an impressive 11 for the season in doing so.
City forced the game into extra-time when Walter Musona netted with 20 minutes remaining, and it looked as though both sides would settle for penalties. ?The Limpopo club had to play the final 50 minutes of the game with 10 men after a red card for defender Sibusiso Mbonani after an elbow off the ball.
And Siyambonga Madikane slid home the winner for a jubilant Ubuntu with five minutes remaining on the clock for a victory that they hope will provide a boost in confidence for their league form as well.
Top-flight AmaZulu survived a scare when they needed penalties to beat second-tier Mthatha Bucks after a 2-2 draw in Durban.
Mashale Rantabane opened the scoring for Bucks, the same player who netted twice when minnows Maluti FET College stunned Orlando Pirates 4-1 in the opening round in 2013.
But Togolese defender Sadat Ouro-Akoriko equalised for Usuthu and in the second minute of extra-time, Simphiwe Lumkwana bagged what looked to be the winner.
It is a first appearance of the season for Lumkwana, whose only other senior goal came in the Nedbank Cup last season. ?But Rantabane would not be denied and deep into injury-time at the end of extra-time, he netted the equaliser.
Bucks fluffed their chance in the shootout though, missing all three of their spot-kicks to go down 3-0 in the post-match penalties.
