Paris Saint-Germain suffered a 2-1 defeat at Parc des Princes on Tuesday to complete their 5-2 aggregate loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League round of 16. Edinson Cavani scored for Unai Emery's side but Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro secured victory in the French capital and completed another disappointing continental campaign for the Ligue 1 leaders.
Positives
The supporters. PSG's passionate fans gave everything for the cause off the pitch, but a number of players let them down with massively underwhelming play.
Alphonse Areola, Thiago Silva and Marquinhos deserve recognition for playing at a high level, but their teammates merit the intense scrutiny they will receive in the next few days.
Negatives
There are many, but the lack of passion was the most alarming. PSG's supporters did everything to will their side to victory, a little too much at times, but the supposed superstars gave them nothing in return.
A number of individual performances can be criticised, but Dani Alves and Marco Verratti warrant the most severe criticism. The Brazilian looked geriatric on the pitch and not for the first time this season, while the Italian showed how little his game has developed in the past few campaigns as he undermined a good display with laughable petulance.
Manager rating out of 10
2 -- As has often been the case since he took over as PSG coach, Emery froze under pressure and illustrated exactly why he will be out of a job at the end of this term -- if not before.
Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)
GK Alphonse Areola, 7 -- So often the subject of intense and unwarranted criticism, the youth academy graduate made a few very good and important saves. Without the Frenchman, PSG would have lost by a larger final score.
DF Dani Alves, 2 -- Past his best. The Brazil international looked every bit his 34 years of age and not for the first time in Europe this season.
DF Marquinhos, 5 -- Making his first appearance since a thigh injury during the 3-0 win over Marseille in Ligue 1 a week or so ago, the Brazilian was not at his best but was also one of his team's better performers.
DF Thiago Silva, 6 -- Reinstated as captain after being dropped in Madrid, the Brazil international was commanding in central defence -- despite the two goals conceded, which were not really on him.
DF Yuri Berchiche, 4 -- Starting the Spaniard and completely dropping the attack-minded Layvin Kurzawa was a surprise. Although Berchiche did not set the world alight, he did not embarrass himself either. He was solid and balanced at a time when PSG needed somebody swashbuckling and buccaneering.
MF Thiago Motta, 4 -- Restored to his deep-lying midfield role, the Italian veteran held his own physically, but finally looks to have reached his expiry date -- and he knows it.
MF Marco Verratti, 3 -- Once again, the Italian let himself down by ruining a good performance with a show of incredible immaturity and petulance. Sent off, the Azzurri star did not help his team, but his dismissal was not the turning point as has been made out by chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
MF Adrien Rabiot, 4 -- It was an uncharacteristically poor showing from the France international, which he acknowledged, but he showed his leadership credentials after the match by facing up to the press when his other teammates could not -- or simply did not want to.
FW Kylian Mbappe, 5 -- Deployed from the start on the left side of the attack instead of the right, the Frenchman was not at his electric best, but his pace still caused Real's defence problems.
FW Edinson Cavani, 6 -- He got his goal, but the Uruguay international was starved of service for most of the match. That will not stop the criticism, though, even if he was one of the few PSG players to work himself into the Parc des Princes pitch in a quest to honour the fans' fervour.
FW Angel Di Maria, 4 -- With Neymar out, it was a chance for the 2018 form man to step up and deliver. The Argentina international failed to do that and showed less character than most when it was badly needed from somebody with so much experience.
Substitutes
FW Javier Pastore, 3 -- Came on and did little. The Argentinian sauntered around for most of his time on the pitch. Even if he was involved in Cavani's goal, he was equally guilty on Real's second.
MF Julian Draxler, NR -- Sent on as a central midfielder instead of an attacker, the German reminded Emery that he has reached his limits in that role.
MF Lassana Diarra, NR -- Emery chose to introduce the Frenchman in Mbappe's place late on. Why? We will never know ...
