Mr. Isaac Kwame Asiamah, the Minister of Youth and Sports has said, his outfit is ready to enter into viable partnership with sports journalists to find lasting solutions to the lack of interest and adequate publicity for women’s sports in Ghana and on the continent.
He said the low level of publicity for the ongoing Total Africa women Cup of Nations (AWCON 2018), had not helped attract the required public interest and attention.
“Officials have literally bus people to the stadium to occupy almost empty space. Sports journalists have not shown the same interest in women’s football as they do for their male counterparts,” he added.
This was in a speech read on his behalf by Mr. Mageed Bawa, Acting Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), during a one day seminar on women in sports journalism organized by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) and International Sports Press Association (AIPS) Africa.
The seminar, which was held at the Alisa Hotel, was under the theme, “raising the bar for today’s women’s sports journalists”.
He said, though politicians have made laws to ensure equality and equity for female participation in sports, there was a serious concern about lack of coverage for female sports.
According to Mr. Asiamah, reportage on women sports have been trivialized and marginalized.
He said women receive strikingly less coverage than men adding that, spectatorship and sponsorship was nothing to write home about.
“The solution to this problem can be found in the organization of seminars. Simply the bar should be raised so that all sports journalists would aspire to higher heights in the reportage of women’s sports activities.
“I challenge female sports journalists to take up the challenge as a personal project,” he noted.
