Ghana, qualified for the biggest sporting event on the continent, after topping in Group C, in the ongoing qualification event in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

The Black Shutters gained six points in the group, of the All Africa Senior Championship, after winning all three matches in the group.

Algeria with four points, joined Ghana from the group as the top two teams to qualify.

With four groups in the tournament, the top two from each group gained automatic qualification for the Rabat Games in August.

Other countries that would join Ghana for the Rabat Games are; Egypt and Uganda from Group A, Mauritius and Zambia from Group B and host Nigeria and South Africa from Group D.

The Black Shutters, are the only side to have qualified with the most points from their group.

Speaking to the GNA Sports in a phone interview from Port Harcourt, Mr. Yeboah Evans, President of the Badminton Association Ghana (BAG) said, they were excited about the qualification as well as the team’s impressive performance in the competition.

He said, they were fortunate to have received immediate results for the Association’s designed programs to develop the sport across the country.

He noted that, the performance of the team gives them confidence going into the future as it would urge them do more to improve badminton in Ghana.

“It gives us enormous benefits that we have always earmarked for. And it has given us results for our national development program which we begun last year.

“We were the best in our group and we also topped all the other groups in terms of points. These were valuable in terms of what we have always earmarked for. We believe that our continuing preparation in the next three months would give us enough medals for the country which we are very hopeful,” he said.

“It’s been very tough with the lack of financial resources but we’ve been able to carry on the mantle to get to where we are now. And the playing body have done the best they can do in the situation and I congratulate them as well.”
