Fresh off their historic gold medal wins at the inaugural African Schools Games in Algeria, in-form twins Obampo Adu-Mintah and Moslena Ama Koramah Adu have further cemented their family's growing legacy in badminton.
The duo captured a combined total of five gold medals and one silver at the ongoing All-African Junior Badminton Championships—dubbed the 2025 Ghana Grand Slam—currently underway at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra.
Competing in front of the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, on Tuesday, rising star Adu-Mintah was outstanding, cruising to a dominant straight-sets (2-0) victory over South Africa’s Aiden Dednam in the Boys’ Singles Final.
His sister Koramah, Ghana's national U-15 champion, followed suit with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Algeria’s Chiraz Halimi to claim gold in the Girls’ Singles.
The talented siblings had already contributed to Ghana’s medal haul earlier on Saturday by clinching gold in the Mixed Doubles and Relay events, part of a competition that features 24 nations vying for continental glory and qualification for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
In a stunning display of family dominance, Adu-Mintah also teamed up with his cousin Moses Yaw Ansong Adu to win the Boys’ Doubles title with a commanding 2-0 victory over Egypt, bringing his personal gold medal tally to four.
Koramah partnered another cousin, Hannah Adu, to secure silver in the Girls’ Doubles, finishing runners-up to Egypt. Her medal tally now stands at three golds and one silver.
Ghana’s commanding performance has further solidified the host nation's growing status as a continental badminton powerhouse, offering a glimpse into a bright future for the country’s emerging talents on both the African and global stage.
The dynamic duo of Adu-Mintah and Koramah had earlier combined to win Mixed Doubles gold at the African Schools Championships, where badminton secured Ghana’s only two gold medals—Koramah also claimed Girls’ Doubles gold with Rachel Quarcoo.
In addition, Adu-Mintah partnered Melchizedek Takyi to earn silver in the Boys’ Doubles and went on to clinch bronze in the Singles, while Ghana also secured bronze in the Mixed Relay—completing a table-topping performance for Team Ghana in badminton.
Addressing the team, Minister Kofi Iddie Adams lauded Ghana’s young shuttlers for their exceptional display and reaffirmed government’s commitment to establishing a National Sports Fund to boost the development of badminton and other sports across the country.
President of the Ghana Badminton Association, Evans Yeboah, also praised the team’s success and encouraged the players to maintain their momentum in future competitions.
“We are thrilled with the progress of badminton in Ghana, especially after securing 40% of the nation’s total medals at the recent African Schools Games—two golds, one silver, and two bronze. We are excited about the future,” said Mr. Yeboah.
Meanwhile, the 2025 Ghana Grand Slam continues with the Junior AirBadminton Championships, which conclude today.
The spotlight will then shift to the final leg of the five-in-one tournament series—the JE Wilson Ghana International Series, running from August 11–17. The event serves as a qualifier for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
