More than 30 of Ghana’s top hockey-playing schools will converge on Accra next month for the 2025 National Senior High Schools & Colleges Hockey Championships, a landmark event designed to secure the future of the sport and unearth the next generation of hockey stars.
The annual festival, which is organised by the Ghana Hockey Association (GHA), in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS), is a key part of the GHA’s drive to develop, promote and sustain hockey across the country.
This year’s edition, which is on the theme: “Sustaining Our Sport: Building the Next Generation for National Development”, will take place from November 7 to 9 at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra.
The three-day competition promises fierce contests, youthful energy and the emergence of future national team prospects.
Beyond the competition, the championships aim to foster unity, discipline, fitness and patriotism while giving young athletes a vital platform to sharpen their skills.
National team coaches and technical experts from leading hockey clubs will be in attendance to scout for exceptional talent capable of representing Ghana on the international stage.
The Central Region leads participation with eight schools, followed by Greater Accra and Ashanti with five each, Eastern Region with four, Western Region with two, and Volta Region, represented solely by Agotime SHS.
Six schools — Achimota School, Ebenezer SHS, Edinaman SHS, St Francis SHS, Hope College and Akosombo International School — will compete in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions.
Traditional powerhouses such as Accra Academy, PRESEC–Legon, Adisadel College, Mfantsipim, Opoku Ware, Prempeh College and St Augustine’s College headline the boys’ competition, while Holy Child, Mfantsiman Girls, St Louis, Yaa Asantewaa Girls and Wesley Girls High School are expected to provide tough opposition in the girls’ category.
In line with the event’s developmental theme, organisers have also introduced a two-day mentorship programme for participants.
The sessions, which are on the theme: “Building the Student-Athlete: Character, Discipline and Balance” (Day 1) and “Beyond the Field: Pathways, Careers and Future Success” (Day 2), aim to inspire students to combine academic excellence with sporting ambition and prepare them for opportunities beyond the pitch.
