The security situation in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is alarming, chairperson of the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization (SARPCCO) Sebastian Ndeitunga said here on Monday.
At a meeting with Acting General Commander of the Angolan National Police Paulo de Almeida, Ndeitunga said "the security situation in the east of DRC is alarming where rebel and militia groups attack trains with civilians and seize their belongings."
He added that the worrying situation has caused so far more than 2 million refugees in the neighboring countries.
Armed conflicts broke out on August 28 between the government armed forces and the rebel forces Defense of the People (CNDP) led by dissident general Laurent Kunda.
Ndeitunga, also general inspector of the Namibian Police, arrived in Angola last Saturday to assess the implementation of the resolutions of the 13th Annual Ordinary Meeting of the SARPCCO.
During his four-day visit to Angola, the SARPCCO chief will also visit a police school in Angola's central Huambo province.
Founded in 1995, SARPCCO has 11 members including Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
