The Kassena Nankana West Students Union in the Upper East Region has added its voice to the call for peace in the upcoming general elections.
Mr Adiali Dickson Ayagataam, President of the Students Union, made the call on Tuesday at a durbar held at Chiana in the Kassena Nankana West District.
He explained that there was the need for peace to prevail since without peace, no meaningful development could take place and said democracy was about development.
He said election was a means of putting responsible people to represent the electorate for development, and that he did not see why people would want to mar it with violence.
He cautioned those who had the intention of causing trouble during the elections to desist from that, since it would not serve any good purpose for them.
He urged the parliamentary candidates in the area who would lose the election to accept defeat and those who would win to cooperate and team up with the losers to champion development in the area since the common goal of the election was about development.
Mr Ayagataam also appealed to the youth not to allow themselves to be used by selfish politicians who would want to use them to create trouble during the elections and said they should rather fight against those who want to cause trouble.
The President used the occasion to appeal to people, especially the well-to-do ones, to help complete the library project in the area to serve as a learning center for students to enhance their learning.
Three Parliamentary candidates including, Mr Leo Kaba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Francis Santua of the People's National Convention Party (PNC), and Mr Desmond Ayirevere of the Convention People's Party (CPP), who attended the function all pledged their commitment to peace during the elections.
School children had earlier carried placards on a root march in Chiana town some of which read " We need peace, love and harmony" "Politics is a tool for development" ,"We need peace but not War", "Politics is about Issues but not on Insults", and "Ballot box but not Bullets" among others.
