Mrs Comfort Mahama, wife of Dr Edward Nasigri Mahama, presidential candidate for the People's National Convention (PNC) on Wednesday said the PNC would give priority to infrastructure development and job creation in the northern sector when voted into power.
"The north has a lot of development potentials that is waiting for the right leadership to put in good use and give the area equal opportunity to contribute its quota to national development," she said.
Mrs Mahama said this when she addressed mini-rallies at 12 communities in the Garau-Tempane Constituency of the Upper East Region.
She stated that all the eight contesting political parties were good in their own ways, but asked the people to critically examine each party and vote for the PNC which had the good of the north at heart.
Mrs Mahama said the PNC government would put up shea-butter processing factories in the Northern Region to boost the production of the butter for local consumption and export.
This, she added, would also provide jobs for many women who would engage in shea nuts picking, while catering for skilled and non-skilled labour that would work in the factories.
Mrs Mahama said when the PNC was voted into power, it would explore the possibility of cement production at Gbangals near Nalerigu and gold mining at Paknatik near Bunkpurugu in the Northern Region.
She told the women in the communities she visited that the drudgery of life that seemed to be their fate would be a thing of the past as they would be gainfully employed and empowered economically to meet the daily demands of family life.
Mrs mahama particularly condemned the seasonal migration of the youth to the south to do menial jobs like providing domestic services, "kayayei," and farm hands.
She said the PNC government would establish vocational institutes to train young people in various skills that would enable them to work in factories to be established in the area.
She told farmers that sorghum and millet production would be given special attention to boost their yields, so that it could successfully feed the brewery that would be established in the north.
At Farfar near Garu, the PNC parliamentary candidate for Garu-Tempane Constituency, Mr Haruna Mintir Tunyab urged all women to vote for the PNC as the vice presidential candidate, who is a woman, would devote much of her time on improving on the lives of women.
He noted that women needed a lot of support to be able to put their skills to good use that would benefit their families and the nation.
Mr Peter Tasiri, PNC parliamentary candidate for Pusiga Constituency told the people that the PNC would erase poverty in the country.
He said every honest, hardworking person would be given support to work hard and produce enough for his or her family and the nation.
