Mr Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah, General Secretary of National Democratic Congress (NDC) has predicted 40 per cent of the total votes in Ashanti Region on December 7.
He said if the massive support Professor John Evans Atta Mills, NDC Presidential Candidate enjoyed in the Region was anything to go by, then a first run victory was not beyond the NDC despite claims that NDC was not strong in the Region.
Mr Asiedu-Nketia made the prediction when addressing an NDC rally at Agogo-Ashanti in Asante Akim North Municipality at the week-end.
He urged supporters of the Party not to succumb to the notion that NDC was against Akans because votes it secured in the Region in previous elections were almost equivalent to that of the three Northern Regions combined.
Mr Asiedu-Nketia asked activists and supporters of the Party to be extra vigilant on December 7, and called on the Electoral Commission (EC) and other major stakeholders in Election 2008 to provide a level playing field to ensure free and fair election.
He said role of the Party's polling agents was crucial to its quest for victory and challenged them to resist any attempt to rig the election.
Mr Asiedu-Nketiah said the Party had instituted measures at the national level to ensure the right things were done and the responsibility to check irregularities which could undermine the electoral process at the local level depended on the polling agents.
He urged their teeming supporters not to be swayed by the lies and deceit being peddled around by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but intensify their campaign in the few days to the polls.
Mr Asiedu-Nketia introduced Mr Thomas Osei-Bonsu, NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Asante Akim North to the crowd and urged them to assist him to wrestle the seat from the NPP.
Mr Osei-Bonsu commended the supporters for their tenacity in the face of vindictiveness and discrimination, saying the NDC would soon come to the aid of Ghanaians with hope and prosperity.
He said an NDC Government would unite Ghanaians and distribute national resources equitably for the benefit of all.
