A Queen mother of the Effutu traditional area, Nana Bondzie Asiako II, has congratulated President John Evans Atta Mills for appointing Madam Ama Benyiwa-Doe, as the first woman Central Regional Minister.
She said the appointment of Madam Benyiwa- Doe did not only fulfil the President's promise to appoint forty percent women as ministers, but was an honour to women and queen mothers in the Region, since the Regional Minister designate is also a queen mother.
Nana Asiako said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Winneba at the weekend.
She also thanked the President for honouring women by appointing a woman as the acting Inspector General of Police and the Speaker of Parliament.
Nana Asiako expressed the hope that the appointment of women into higher offices in the country will serve as an example and encourage girls and women in general to aspire to greater heights.
"The appointment of women into high offices shows that President John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills is going to push women up to enable school girls learn hard as we are now rubbing shoulders with men," the queen mother said.
She pleaded with Madam Ama Benyiwa- Doe that when her appointment was finally approved by Parliament, she should use her office to help promote women's welfare.
The queen mother suggested that women in the region should be given micro credits finance to enable them expand their businesses, so that they could cater for their children, since most of them were single parents.
Nana Asiako was not happy that fathers in the Effutu Municipality were not taking care of their children, and appealed to them to rescind their decision.
According to her, records from the Department of Social Welfare indicated that 131 fathers neglected their children in 2008, and this was a cause for worry.
She entreated fathers to look after their children.
