Football’s governing body FIFA has announced that all 64 matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia will be produced in Ultra High Definition (UHD) with High Dynamic Range (HDR) for the first time in the history of the competition. Multiple video formats (1080i, 1080p or UHD HDR) will be available, with VR and 360-degree video on demand (VoD) also part of the overall production plan.
A total of 37 cameras, of which eight with UHD/HDR and 1080p/SDR dual output, and another 8 with 1080p/HDR and 1080p/SDR dual output, will cover every match. A further 8 super-slow-motion and 2 ultra-motion cameras, a cable-cam and a cineflex heli-cam will also be deployed. “The use of progressive scanning as a baseline production format and HDR will guarantee improved image quality for all media rights licensees, regardless of their delivery format,” said FIFA in a statement.
Additional technological innovations include immersive audio via the UHD feed and a Virtual Reality (VR) feature available as a live experience as well as 360-degree VoD.
