Description
The Incumbent will primarily be responsible for the following:
- Design Electrical Systems
- The incumbent will design electrical and mechanical systems and piped services for commercial, residential, and industrial construction projects. These can include both high-voltage systems for delivering power and low-voltage applications. They will work closely with designers to determine how to effectively incorporate electrical elements, determining specifications and preparing drawings.
- Direct Electrical, Mechanical and Piped Services Contractors
- They will directly oversee and manage teams of electrical, mechanical and piped services contractors and technicians. They will direct daily activities, answer questions about power needs, cooling loads, electrical codes, and guide workers throughout the construction process to ensure that quality specifications are met.
- Resolve Electrical. Mechanical and Piped Services Issues
They will resolve issues related to electric and mechanical systems or devices and electrical piped services that arise during the
- course of construction. Changes to a building’s design or practical concerns may result in existing plans no longer being viable, or specifications may change requiring a different configuration, and incumbent must act quickly revise plans and resolve issues to prevent delays.
- Develop Cost Estimates
- They will help develop cost estimates for both material and labour. By analysingdrawings and site specifications, they will project the amount of materials that project will require. They also estimate manpower and timelines, giving the Construction Manager and Program Manager the information needed to consider contractor selection and ensure the project remains within budget.
- Manage Construction Schedules
- The incumbent will also manage construction schedules related to services elements of job sites. They will work closely with both planners and utility providers to determine when project milestones need to be completed to avoid delays and maintain profitability. They will determine these schedules in collaboration with subcontractors to ensure that all services work are completed in tandem with other elements of the project.
- Conduct System Testing
- The incumbent will conduct tests of electrical and mechanical systems and piped services throughout the construction process. They will test individual components and or the whole system, including overseeing final inspections of the job. They will check all services installationto ensure adherence to local and national building codes, safe operation of all devices, and accurate power delivery.
Generally, these responsibilities are broken down as below:
- Analysing project specifications, developing work schedules, and delegating tasks to different teams to ensure that all electrical, mechanical systems and piped services (plumbing, fire-fighting, etc.) on projects are installed according to the design.
- Completing designs using AutoCAD software and making appropriate adjustments once the client and other engineers have given their input.
- Supervising technicians and artisans on site to ensure that electrical and mechanical systems and piped services are installed according to the design.
- Ensuring that each project stays within the allocated budget and timeframe.
- Estimate costs and submit bids for engineering and constructionprojects, and prepare contract documents as appropriate.
- Research and analyse customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
- Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
- Research, design, evaluate, install, operate, and maintain electrical, mechanical products, equipment, systems and processes to meet requirements, applying knowledge of engineering principles
Minimum Years Relevant Experience Required for This Position:
- 5+ years of progressive experience in the construction industry either as part of the consultant or contractor teams.
- Previous project management experience is preferred
- Membership of the Ghana Institute of Engineers is an advantage

- Problem-solving skills – diagnosing and addressing the causes of malfunctions
- Prioritization skills – looking at a big-picture plan and breaking down the order of operations necessary to make the plan happen
- Delegation skills – delegating tasks to labourers, artisans and technicians, providing guidance as these workers complete their tasks
- Communication skills – communicating with fellow engineers, technicians, and project stakeholders
