A good surge in sales of Nano in July notwithstanding, Tata Motors has lost its position as India's second biggest car maker to Hyundai, just a month after it had gained the spot.
As per the figures released by the two companies, while Tata Motors sold 27,864 units last month, Hyundai clocked a total sale of 28,811 units in the domestic market.
While Hyundai Motor's domestic sales increased by only 24.22 per cent in July, that of Tata Motors rose by 62.08 per cent -- boosted by good Nano sales.
During the month, Tata Motors sold 9,000 Nanos, as against 7,704 in June.
In June, Tata Motors claimed the second spot by selling 27,811 units, compared to Hyundai Motor's 27,366.
Tata Motors had increased the production of Nano after the commissioning of its factory at Sanand in Gujarat, which has an initial annual capacity of 2.5 lakh units that can be scaled up to 5 lakh units.
After the inauguration of the Sanand plant on June 2, Tata Motors surprised the domestic auto industry by beating Hyundai Motor's years-long stranglehold.
Maruti Suzuki continues to be the undisputed market leader, notching up its best-ever monthly sales in July at 90,114 units, a 33.45 per cent increase from 67,528 units in July 2009.
