The British navy will receive support from BAE Systems for the combat management systems aboard its Type 23 frigates and an aviation training vessel.
The seven-year contract from the Ministry of Defense is worth about $72.9 million.
The CMS assists a ship's command in detecting and countering threats to the ship and surrounding forces by managing all relevant external and internal information provided by the ship's radars. It integrates the information with the activities of the anti-air weapons systems as well as other sensors and weapons.
BAE said the contract is part of a larger Joint Support Solution initiative, which integrates the Type 45 support contract -- awarded to BAE's Mission Systems business unit -- in September 2009 to create a support contract worth more than $1.3 billion.
The JSS provides a common support framework for the CMS on the Type 45 destroyers, Type 23 frigates and RFA Argus, all of which are supplied by BAE Systems.
"This contract generates further significant through-life cost savings to the (British navy) through management and engineering efficiencies," said David Leitch, Naval Command and Information Systems director, Mission Systems. "It will achieve the objectives of the Combat Management System Convergence strategy established by the MOD and BAE Systems."
The JSS is being delivered by Mission Systems employees in New Malden, Dorchester, Frimley and Portsmouth.
