A grant from the Chinese government has been secured for the construction of a new modern market in Aflao, President John Dramani Mahama has announced.
The disclosure was made during the sod-cutting ceremony for Phase Two of the Blekusu Sea Defence project held in the Ketu South Municipality.
According to President Mahama, the new market forms part of broader efforts to boost local economic development in the Volta Region, with a particular focus on restoring livelihoods affected by tidal waves and improving infrastructure in border communities.
He described the grant as a strong show of cooperation between Ghana and China and a timely intervention for traders and residents in Aflao.
“The people of Aflao deserve a safe and modern trading environment,” President Mahama stated. “Thanks to the generous support of the Chinese government, construction of the new Aflao market will begin soon to address the infrastructural needs of this critical border town.”
The President noted that the new market project complements ongoing development initiatives in the area, including the Blekusu Sea Defence project, aimed at protecting coastal communities and creating a more resilient local economy.
He called on residents to support the project and work together to maintain the new facility once completed.
